Your booking emails should be simple. I’ve found that a 1000-word email extolling the values of the bands, your booking skills, and how amazing and exciting the show will be often go unread. Talent buyers get hundreds of emails a day so something simple and concise is the way to go. Feel free to use these templates and change them accordingly:

Key-wise, I feel like there’s almost too much tonal information for everyone to hear it the same. If it was just up to the melody, I’d say hands down G major because the melody starts and ends on G the majority of the time (where has that pun been all my life?). However, there’s a clear E in the bass under the G at certain cadence points, making for a v chord (Em11) leading us back to Am, which comes on the strong beat. These are two good reasons to hear it in A Dorian.

It’s easy to make the rest of the notes in a C major scale just by combining our three existing intervals. Let’s start with D. If you know your music theory, you know that D has the same relationship to G that G has to C. Just like you can make a G by multiplying C’s frequency by 3/2, so too can you make your D by multiplying G’s frequency by 3/2. The interval between C and G, and between G and D, is called a perfect fifth. You can go up a perfect fifth from any note by multiplying its frequency by 3/2. So let’s go up a fifth from G at 3/2 Hz, multiplying it by 3/2 to get a D at 9/4 Hz. Then we can bring it down an octave by dividing its frequency in half, giving us a D at 9/8 Hz. So far, so good.

If you’re considering taking an online course to become a better composer, arranger, orchestrator, and all-around songwriter, head over to Orchestration for Strings to preview Soundfly’s mentored online course for free, and read on below to see what recent students have said about the experience!

The thing about Top 40 music is that it has to be easily digestible to be successful. Usually, it can’t be anything too complex — simple, singable melodies, accompanied by very logical chord changes. As it turns out, this makes pop a great place to start learning about theory and expand your harmonic knowledge.

It’s so easy nowadays to get caught up in what’s trendy, and in the age of independent artists being able to produce and release work on one’s own, it’s hard to stand out when there’s so much content available at our fingertips. But in the end, if you’re doing something that feels 200% authentic to you, confidence will follow. Clear and to the point, the legendary Aretha Franklin knows her stuff.

And Ischi really did have the chops! Check out this live performance from 1983, where he sings one of Lang’s own classic tunes, “Mein Vater Ist Ein Appenzeller.”

That’s a tough question! I don’t think that artists necessarily need to be more entrepreneurial. But it is a question of perspective. Some artists make their art for the love of it before thinking about how they are going to sell it. But a work of art is work and all work deserves to be rewarded! I want to help artists who would like to sell their music but just don’t know how to it or who can’t even conceive of the process.

It’s also important to show vulnerability. We all have things we’re dealing with. And if you can open up to your fans about something and show a little genuine vulnerability, you’ll find yourself building a much deeper connection with them.

This is an exciting music video that takes full advantage of high-intensity performance footage and a gripping narrative. The members of Bullet for My Valentine are soaked by rain throughout the performance, which is both perfectly fitting for the song title as well as an ode to the twist in the storyline towards the end of the video. After discovering her partner cheating, the girl violently pours a can of gasoline all over the man, the other girl, and herself, before dropping the lighter to reveal that it’s in fact water — a cruel joke in retribution.

If you learned how to tune your guitar to itself when you first started learning the guitar, you’ll remember that the note in Fret 5 corresponds to the note of the open string on the next string down. The only exception is the 3rd string, where in order to get the same note as the 2nd string open, we need to play Fret 4. This is due to how the guitar is mostly tuned in intervals of a perfect fourth, except for the 2nd string, which is tuned a major third above the 3rd string (G to B is a major third).

I find that Ariana Grande’s “Thank u, next” has a similar message of saying “bye bye bye” to a lover. Grande is herself a pop princess and I love that today, this one woman is breaking all of the pop records, because some of those records were previously held by boy bands like Exhibit A above. The industry is still male-dominated, but at least we’ve got a few femmes like Grande killing it. Speaking of which…

It’s been a crazy journey, and the indie touring scene can be both amazing and awful. Stressing out about your next meal, tank of gas, or whether you’re gonna get kicked out of that Walmart parking lot is not always fun. But we’ve had some good times too, so here are a few ways to have more fun on tour (even if your livelihood doesn’t depend on it!).
