Sometimes the solution is obvious. Maybe the student has a clear goal in mind, and they just don’t know how to get there. Maybe they wanted to make a bumping club track, and the beats are weak — beginner producers usually don’t know how to layer or mix drums. A lot of the time, there are some good ideas but they’re strung together without any particular structure. That’s understandable; structure is hard! Or maybe there was a misguided attempt at “realism.” Every semester, someone takes a piece they composed or arranged and outputs audio straight from their notation software. The result consistently sounds like garbage. I want them to think of the sound coming out of the speakers as the “real” music, not a placeholder for an eventual performance by humans — nothing against live performance, but my class is about making music in the box. Rather than settling for terrible fake strings or brass, we try to figure out what software instruments might sound unapologetically cool.

Over our C minor chord, we get a triplet figure of all B♭s, making the chord a C minor 7. This is followed by the use of a passing tone (Ab) to get from the 7th to the 5th. Finally, over the B♭, we have an F (the fifth of the chord), moving to a G (the 13th, another tension).
In this piece, harmony and melody are very limited. Harmony is non-existent (if considered as the use of at least three different pitches at the same time) and melody is reduced to one single note, with the only possible combinations resulting in unisons and octaves.

The ability to move up and down the neck of a guitar and understand what your available notes are in any given fret, is something that many guitarists struggle with well into their careers. It takes an effort to commit oneself to learning where all of the notes are and the patterns they create, but that doesn’t mean it has to be difficult to pick up this skill.
Have you noticed by now that “fun” means “not music?” Rather, not music business. I don’t know about you, but I have so much more fun when I’m not thinking about my next show, booking the next leg of the tour, or planning out my next release strategy. I love being a full-time musician, but it is important to step back from it sometimes. I have the most fun when I’m living in a different world, a world written by somebody else. Old school hip hop artists
The presence of the G# in the Harmonic Minor scale changes the names of the modes, because they now contain a different tone. For example, D Dorian has now become D Dorian (Augmented fourth): This mode differs from D Dorian by one note, the G#, which is an augmented fourth away from the Tonic, hence its name D Dorian (Augmented fourth). In the same scale, the mode constructed on E has now become E Phrygian (Major third). Since a Phrygian mode is by definition a minor mode, some people prefer to call it Mixolydian (Minor second, Minor sixth).
It is real easy to mess up an entire mix with too much processing — in particular, mix buss compression. Over the years of searching the internet creeping on my favorite mixers’ (Jacquire King, Dave Pensado, Chris Lord-Alge, and many more) mix buss compression settings, I’ve found that a little goes a long way.
